Justice For All Volunteer Day 2008
On Saturday, May 17, volunteers from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and City Year Cleveland will once again roll up their sleeves and work together to help improve one of Cleveland’s communities on Volunteer Day, in partnership with City Year Cleveland and its 100 Hours of Power Service Marathon. This annual event provides much needed “done in a day” service to a community in need of volunteer assistance. Work on projects will take place beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending by 1:00 p.m. or as completed.
This year, we will be working in the Broadway/Slavic Village community of Cleveland. There are a number of projects for volunteers and we encourage you to involve members of your staff and families in this service activity. Projects for Volunteer Day 2008 include:
1. University Settlement Main and Panek Buildings (4800 Broadway Ave./Cleveland, OH 44127)
University Settlement is a non profit social service United Way agency that serves children, families and senior citizens through programs that include Neighborhood Family to Family Program, Healthy Fathering Initiative, Help Me Grow Program, Youth Programs (before and after school and summer sessions), Senior Day Care, Hunger Center, Evening Meals and Grocery Distribution, Transitional Housing, Magic Johnson Computer Lab.
Volunteers will be involved in interior and exterior painting, clean up and gardening/landscaping. In addition to providing much needed improvement to spaces that are used by many every day, we will also be helping to make more meeting rooms available for community service activities.
2. Legal Aid Brief Advice Clinic at University Settlement Main Building Senior Center
(4800 Broadway Ave./Cleveland, OH 44127)
Volunteers will provide intake and/or pro bono legal services to individuals from the community seeking assistance at this drop-in legal clinic. Legal Aid staff lawyers will provide support and resources for the volunteers.
3. Willow School (5004 Glazier Ave./Cleveland, OH 44127)
This is a K-8 school in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District that serves the youth of Slavic Village. Volunteers will provide assistance in a number of painting projects including exterior and interior murals, “character” words in the cafeteria, playground blacktop games; building an outdoor learning center and light landscaping in school yard.
